St Andrew's Chuch Restoration Appeal |
The church of St Andrew’s, Wickmere has been providing spiritual comfort, a place to celebrate in times of joy and a haven and solace in times of trouble for this small rural parish for almost a thousand years. You don’t have to be a churchgoer or Christian to appreciate the importance of this oldest building in the village as a beautiful landmark, an uplifting backdrop to the joys of christenings and weddings, a peaceful setting to remember our loved ones and a focus of spirituality and tranquillity for the Parish. |

According to the experts, our round tower and other architectural features, wall paintings and monuments not only make St Andrew’s a jewel in the crown of North Norfolk Churches but also make Wickmere’s parish church one of only a handful of such treasures in the UK.
But we have come very close to losing much of the wonder of this vitally important building. Rising and penetrating damp over a number of years have recently manifested themselves in damage to wall paintings, ornaments and the building structure itself. Urgent remedial work is now required to both nave and chancel roofs, much masonry repair and drainage work needs to be done and several windows need re-leading. This small parish, together with English Heritage, has managed to raise most of the money required for the work, the majority of the funding coming from English Heritage. However, we are still some £16,000 short of our minimum funding requirement.
