Recently, for the second time since I have been a Churchwarden, I received an email
from a Canadian scholar, researching a history of Blickling from many miles away.
This particular student wanted to know as much as possible about a brass in the
Church of a woman holding two dead babies in her arms. I of course wished to help
and went in search of the brass in question. It really is a wonderful piece of work and
I would urge anyone who visits to have a good look at it. As my new friend in Canada
told me, it is a brass of Anne Wode (or Astley - as she married into the Astley family
of Melton Constable) who visited her sister at Blickling in 1512, only to perish from
a flu caught in the wicked weather that we sometimes have.
I have to admit that I have tried to google her and find out a lot more about her, in
order to make this month’s letter interesting. However, all I come across when I search
for Astley and Blickling, is some dreadful concert that Rick gave a few years ago. I
know a few people who went to that and do not want to be reminded of it! Oh how
things change, from a beautuiful and touching piece of 16th century art to some music
that not many want to hear again. By the way, I think that the Blickling concerts will
return this summer after a break last year. If you don’t want to picnic with the Who
or Billy Ocean, you can always come to Church with Anne Wode/Astley and me!
